Assignments and discussions provide instructors a means to measuring disciplinary concept retention, comprehension, and application. While assignments often include items such quizzes, tests, and exams, instructors also consider other activities that help them assess how a student demonstrates knowledge and understanding of course content. Assignments can be formal, informal, rote, authentic, high-stakes, low-stakes, anonymous, public, individual or collective, with the purpose of the assessment driving its characteristics. Discussions also provide instructors insight into how a student applies critical thinking, problem solving or understanding of specific topics or application of information. They support constructive learning through the interchange that occurs with their peers. As a whole, assignments and discussions can be viewed as opportunities for learning, that allow students to practice and demonstrate the concepts within a course.
