Extra credit is currently not a default option in Canvas. However, you can give students extra credit using a variety of options. A point based gradebook is the default, if you have a weighted gradebook and want to add extra credit see this article link for further instructions.  However, there are four possible ways for you to assign extra credit in a point-based gradebook:

Create a New Assignment with Zero Point Value

Useful for practice activities or low stakes assignments that do not count towards the final grade. Here you create a zero-point assignment, and assign points later.

  1. Create an assignment with zero points possible.

  2. After students complete an online submission or submit work offline, you can add and adjust points in the gradebook.

Note

Note: For a zero-point assignment to factor into a student's grade, you must add a positive point value to at least one additional assignment in any assignment group.

Create Extra Credit Within a Rubric

You can use rubrics as a way to award extra points for different criteria.

  1. Add an additional Criterion to a Rubric for extra credit.

  2. Make sure you make the rubric worth more than the assignment and you can give students extra points or not without affecting the actual assignment points.
