Editing Captions for Accuracy and Accessibility

Captions on videos are a critical part of making learning materials accessible to students who have limitations with hearing or sight. Panopto can help in this activity by auto-generating captions based on the audio portion of your video or podcast. However, sometimes it may not understand specific language used within a discipline or due to voice tonality or pronunciation. It is incumbent on the instructor to ensure that captions are as accurate as possible to ensure students are given the maximum opportunity to learn the topics presented in your course or lectures.

While captions can be edited within the Panopto application, the capability can pose some challenges on longer videos. A more effective way to edit captions is to download the caption file and edit it offline, allowing you to correct all issues, and then reloading the captions into the video. The steps below outline how to accomplish this.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Open your recording in the Panopto Editor, click Captions in the left sidebar, select Import Captions, and then choose Import automatic captions from the drop-down menu.

  2. Once the captions have finished processing, close the editor and return to the Panopto Recordings page where your video is located.

  3. Locate your recording, click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the upper-right corner of the recording, and then select Settings.

  4. In the Settings window, click Captions in the left sidebar. Under the English caption section, click Download unedited caption file.

  1. The caption file will download as a .txt file. Open the file in a text editor, such as Notepad.

  2. Edit the captions as needed, then select File > Save As. Save the file as a Text (.txt) file using either the original filename or a new one.

  3. Click Save to save your edited caption file.

  4. Return to the Captions tab in the Settings window.

  5. Under the English caption section, click Delete Captions.

  6. If prompted to confirm the deletion, click OK.

  7. Under Upload Captions, select the checkbox labeled Captions are based on the edited session.

  8. Click Choose File, browse to your edited .txt caption file, select it, and click Open.

  9. After the filename appears next to Choose File, click Upload Captions.

  10. After the upload is complete, the Last Captioning Request section will update to reflect the new upload.

    Once the File is Uploaded the “Last Captioning Request” will show

     

  11. Close the Settings window.

  12. Return to the Panopto Recordings page. If the captions are still processing, wait until processing is complete before continuing.

  13. Open the recording in the Panopto Editor or video player and review the captions to confirm that your edits were uploaded successfully and display correctly.
