Recording a Session in Panopto for Mac

ID&D KB How-to Guide

Working together to enhance teaching & learning. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to the ID&D team.

Panopto is the campus support lecture capture system.  Faculty who wish to use Panopto must enable Panopto within MyClasses before recording. (Please refer to Enabling Panopto to Your MyClasses Course and Installing the Panopto Recorder for more information.)

Please Note

You can click on the images below to see them larger and with more detail.

Selecting a Folder Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open the Panopto Recorder on your Mac.
When you launch the recorder for the first time, you will be prompted to sign in. If there is no site pre-filled, click Add Site and enter salisbury.hosted.panopto.com and click the button Sign in.

  2. Your preferred browser should open and direct you to Sign in to Panopto. Make sure MyClasses Canvas is selected in the drop-down box and click Sign in. Enter your standard SU username and password. You will then see an option to direct you back to the Panopto Recorder

  3. Click Create New Recording at the top left of the screen.

  4. Use the options at the top of the screen to select your preferred folder to save the video within, as well as the title for the session.

Recording New Sessions Step-by-Step Guide

  1. By default, the Recorder will open up to the last known configuration of recording devices.  If you have recorded content before, the same devices will automatically be chosen.

    1. If you have not recorded content before, the Mac recorder defaults to Offline Recording.  To complete an Online Recording, click the down arrow under "Manage Recordings", and select a folder if there are folders available.

    2. Below you will find examples of Audio and Video settings that can be chosen. Choose what works for you depending on whether you are recording Audio and Video, Audio alone, a PowerPoint, or any other option.

      1. Audio Only

Audio is set to Built-in Microphone and Video is set to None.

      4. Video

        1. To add video to any of the aforementioned recording scenarios, within the Audio/Video area of the Mac Recorder, click on the up/down arrows to select a video source.

        2. Selecting the "Built-in-iSight" camera or FaceTime HD (depending on the age of your Mac), Panopto will give you a video preview.

    3. Start Recording

      1. After selecting the available inputs, begin the recording by clicking on "Record."

    4. Stop or Pause Recording

      1. To stop recording content, switch back to the Mac Recorder (Command +Tab), and click on "Stop." You can also click "Pause" if you would like to continue recording in that session.

*Important Note*

  • When recording, you will notice, whenever the recording is paused, that the recording timer will continue to run. Even while paused the stream will continue to be recorded. This feature is a safety net that keeps all footage of the stream while paused within the editing feature, in the case that the user fails to un-pause, to continue recording.

When you have finished recording, a pop-up window will allow you to rename the session if you haven’t already, and then Upload the recording to the Panopto server. After you press Upload, a screen will show the status of the recordings.  As the recording is being transferred to the server, you can preview the recording in the "Preview" area if "Audio," "Video," or "Screen Capture" was recorded.  If the preview was not sufficient, you could choose to "Pause Upload" to pause the upload of the files to the server.  The "Actions" button has two options; "Show Files" or "Delete" (will show or delete the local files in the Panopto Recordings directory).  Panopto Support offers more detailed information on the recording status.
