You might want to have a custom link in your left course navigation panel in MyClasses when there is a link your students might have to use repeatedly.  You might have added links to your sidebar in the past when you added a publisher link or Zoom.

Add a Custom Link

Using this feature allows you to add a custom link in your Course Navigation Menu that appears on the left side of your course.

Go to your MyClasses course where you want this link added.  Scroll down to the bottom on the left course navigation panel and select Settings.

  1. Click on the Apps tab on the Settings home page.

  2. In the search box on the right, type in Redirect to go right to this tool.

  3. You will see the search returns a blue arrow turning around on itself.  It isn’t labeled with any text to identify it, but if you hover your mouse over the blue arrow, you will see a pop-up box that explains what the tool does.  Click on the blue arrow icon.

  1. After you click on the blue arrow, you will see this page.  Click on the maroon box +Add App.

add app
  1. The Add App window will open.  From here, in the top box where it says Redirect Tool, type in the name that you want your app to have.  Then type in the URL address for where you want this app to redirect your students.

  2. Make sure the boxes for “force open in a new tab” and “show in course navigation” are checked.  If you’re not going out to another website, but to another page within the course, you do not have to have “force open in a new tab” checked.  For example: if you’re teaching a journalism course and students will have to visit the website of The Guardian news site, the force open box would be checked.  If you’re linking to a page within your course or on your university’s website, you don’t need to have the Force open in new tab box checked.

  3. Click Add app to add the app to your navigation bar.

Edit or Delete a Custom Link

Removing a custom link when it is no longer needed is easy to do.

Scroll to the bottom of your left navigation panel like you did in Step 2 previously.  Click on Settings.

  1. In the Settings window, click on Apps like you did in Step 3 previously.  On the upper right, click on View App Configurations.

    view app configurations
  1. An alphabetical list of all the apps will appear.  Scroll down in the list to find your app that you want to either edit or delete.  You will see when you’re on this page that all the apps that were added by your LMS administrator have a closed padlock icon to the left of the app name, and an info icon to the right of the name.  This means this app is locked and you won’t be able to edit it or delete it.  If you click on the info icon, it will show you where this app is located in your course or would be located in your course if you upload it. You will notice when you scroll down to the app you added with the Redirect tool that it does not have a closed padlock to the left.  This means, you as the creator are allowed to edit or delete this app.  To the right of the app you added, you will see a gear icon.  If you click the carrot on the right of this icon, a window will pop up.  From this window you can edit the app, view which pages the app is placed on within your course and edit the placement, or delete the app.  From here, if you select edit, you will see an edit window that will allow you to edit the name, consumer key, the URL address, any domain name, custom fields, and the privacy settings.  The Custom Fields box is where you would fix the URL address if you initially entered it incorrectly.  Be sure to fix just the URL address and leave the URL= in place.

  1. The privacy settings allow you to select anonymous, email only, name only, and public.  These privacy settings only indicate information that might be shared with MyClasses / Canvas if your page is within the LMS.  If the link directs outward, no information would be sent.  The automatic selection is always anonymous.  You can leave it at that setting.

Canvas does not support the option to include additional links in the left navigation panel, so there are no additional guides for this tool.  Please contact ID&D if you experience any difficulty using this tool.
