How to record a lecture or presentation in Panopto for Windows
Panopto is the campus support-supported lecture capture system. Faculty who wish to use Panopto must enable Panopto within MyClasses before recording.
Installing Panopto:
From your MyClasses Canvas course, select Panopto Recordings on the left course navigation.
The course folder will appear with all of the recordings by your instructor. Click Create and then select Panopto for Windows.
Download the appropriate Panopto Recorder based on your operation system.
After successfully, installing Panopto on your computer, you are now ready to make a recording. You can record your screen, a webcam, and audio simultaneously. Before creating a recording, ensure that any device you want to use is open and ready (webcam, PowerPoint presentation, other software, etc.)
Launching Panopto Recorder:
Starting from the desktop app:
Click on the Panopto icon from your computer and select Launch Recorder to start recording in the Panopto Application (see below).
Or you can start a recording from within your course (skip to step 5).
Choose the option to Sign in with MyClasses Canvas. If you are working from your own computer, you can check the box to Remember my authorization for this service.
The next screen will prompt you to login to MyClasses via Canvas. Enter your SU username and password and click Login.
Starting from the desktop app:
From within your course, click on the Panopto Recordings link on the course navigation.
Click Create and then select Panopto for Windows.
3. Click the Launch Panopto button.
4. Then click the option to Open Panopto Recorder:
5. You should see your SU username logged into the recorder. If you do not, click sign-in and enter your single sign-on credentials. You will need to be logged in with your SU account to find your Assignments folder to record into.
Creating a Recording:
The recorder will launch and you will need to decide what you will be recording for this presentation and where it will be published:
To the right of the Folder Name field at the top you will see a large drop down arrow. Click on the arrow and choose the assignments folder for your class.
For “Name:” enter a title for your recording. Your instructor will most likely provide instructions and ask you to include your First and Last Name.
Choose the Video Source you would like to record as the primary source (i.e. webcam). You will see a live preview in the box of the video that will be recorded.
Determine what Audio Source you would like to record for viewers to hear (i.e. microphone). You can test the audio by speaking into the microphone and see if the audio levels move.
Choose the secondary capture sources (i.e. Main Screen or a PowerPoint).
Click the large RECORD button to begin your recording. Once you are done, return to this screen and click either PAUSE (to pause the recording and have the ability to resume) or STOP (to end the recording).
Once everything has been recorded and you have stopped your recording, you will be taken to the recording status page. If you forgot to name the session before you began recording, you can update the Session name to be more than the date and time from this screen. Include your name and or the topic of the session. Then click Upload.
The recording should automatically upload to the server. If it does not, click on the “Upload to Server” option.
The following screen will appear. When the upload is complete, exit this screen.
You will be able to see the video you recorded in the Panopto Recordings Assignments folder for that course.
Important Note
When recording, you will notice, whenever the recording is paused, that the recording timer will continue to run. Even while paused the stream will continue to be recorded. This feature is a safety net that keeps all footage of the stream while paused within the editing feature, in the case that the user fails to un-pause, to continue recording.
Tip
TIP: You must be connected to the internet in order to upload a recording, but you can record without an internet connection and the recording will upload as soon as you connect back to the internet.
