ID&D KB How-to Guide

Working together to enhance teaching & learning. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to the ID&D team.

The assignment tool allows for the creation of graded or ungraded assignments and activities for students to complete. These assignments may be submitted online in MyClasses, submitted on paper in class, submitted through publisher content or via another external tool that is integrated into MyClasses Canvas.

Note: Assignments that are graded automatically generate a column in the gradebook; you cannot create a column in the gradebook unless it is an assignment type.

Assignments can be created under the Assignments tool in MyClasses by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Assignments link in the Course navigation menu on the left side of your course page.

    2. Enter a description or instructions for your students

  4. Scroll down and enter grading criteria for the following:

    1. Enter the number of points the assignment will be valued at.

    2. If your assignments are separated into groups for your gradebook, select the appropriate group to save the assignment under.

    3. Choose how the points will be displayed (Percentage, Complete/Incomplete, Points, Letter Grade, GPA Scale, Not Graded)

    4. Determine if the assignment counts towards the final grade.

  5. Next determine

    1. How the assignment will be submitted (No Submission, Online, OnPaper, External Tool, Lucid)

    2. How many times the student can attempt the assignment

  6. You may opt to add special requirements to an assignment:

    1. Plagiarism Review: You may want the file submitted to undergo a Turn It In review

    2. Group Assignment: You may have assigned students to groups and you want the assignment to be graded for the group

    3. Peer Review: You may want the submission to undergo a peer review

  7. Finally, you want to ensure the assignment is scheduled for students:

    1. Identify who the assignment will be completed by - the default is Everyone, but you can select specific individuals or groups

    2. Identify the Due Date for the assignment

    3. Identify when students can begin to submit assignment

    4. Identify when students can no longer make submissions

  8. Save the assignment as

    1. an unpublished assignment (students will not see it on their list)

    2. a published assignment (will appear on the assignment page, the course calendar and summary list)
