As of January 18, 2025 you can now add checkpoints to graded discussions, allowing for two unique due dates and times to be entered. This allows for one due date to be set for an initial post and a second due date to be added for responding to peers.
Note: At this time, graded checkpoints do not work for group discussions.

How to Add Graded Checkpoints Step-by-Step:
Create a new discussion or click edit to open your assignment options for an existing discussion.
Check the option to make the discussion “Graded.” This option will create a graded discussion with a single due date.
To add a second due date, click the option that appears under “Graded” to enable “Assign graded checkpoints.”
Scroll down and find the Checkpoint Settings to add (a) how many points the student can earn by posting their initial reply to the discussion prompt, (b) how many peers the student is required to reply to, and (c) how many points the student can earn by successfully responding to the designated number of peers. The “Total Points Possible” will calculate points for both the initial post and peer replies.
To designate the due date for the initial discussion post and the peer replies, scroll down to “Assign To” and add due dates and times for (a) “Reply to Topic” for the initial post and (b) “Required Replies” for the peer reply posts. If needed, select (c) “Clear” to reset the due date and time.
