Closed captioning on instructional videos is essential for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in learning. Captions also enhance comprehension by reinforcing key concepts, improving retention, and allowing learners to engage with content in noisy or quiet environments. Additionally, they provide a valuable resource for reviewing material, making educational content more effective and equitable for all learners.

First, you need to have a copy of the media recording on your computer, usually found in mp4 format. If you created the video, locate it on your hard drive. If it is externally produced, there are different ways to download the file. Listed below is one option:

  1. In Google Chrome open the course, and play the video.

  2. While the video is playing, hover the mouse over top of the player and right click.

  3. Select “Save video as…” and save the file in a location that you can find later.

Next, we will need to bring the video file into a video program to begin adding captions. We recommend using Panopto, as it is integrated with the MyClasses platform. Panopto has a feature that recognizes speech and automatically tries to create captioning.

Using Panopto to Create Captions

Below are the instructions for Panopto:

  1. Enable Panopto Recordings in a playground or development course.

  2. Click on Panopto Recordings on the navigation bar.

  3. Click on the green “Create” button and select Upload Media.

  4. Upload the video file from your hard drive.

  5. After the video file has finished processing click on “Panopto Recordings” on the MyClasses Canvas navigation bar.

  6. You should see the video you just uploaded, hover over the video and select edit.

  7. On the left hand side select “Captions”.

  8. Left click on “Import Captions”.

  9. Select the feature for automatic captions.

  10. You will now need to review and edit the captions as necessary. The accuracy of the automatic captioning differs based on the clarity of the recording. When you are finished select publish in the top right. The program will ask you if you want to leave the editor. Select “Ok”.

  11. Return to the Panopto Recordings page on MyClasses Canvas.

  12. Hover your mouse over the video again and select settings.

  13. Select “Captions” and “Download File”. You now have the SRT file necessary to add captions to your media upload/recording.
