Instructors who are interested in separating the student's first and last name into separate columns in the Gradebook can enable and disable this feature as needed. When student names are split, the Student Last Name column will display first and will include section information. When split names are enabled, both columns are sortable and separate columns for the split names are respected and displayed in the Gradebook CSV export if you download your gradebook.

Note: If a user has a preferred name that is different from their legal name, the legal name is displayed.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. On the Course Navigation menu, select Grades.

Course Navigation Menu where Grades is the third item on the list

  2. Click View to open the dropdown menu and select the Split Student Names option under Columns.

The View dropdown menu from the Gradebook is open and the Split Student Names option is highlighted.

  3.  Once enabled, the Split Student Names option will show a checkmark next to it in the View menu and the Gradebook will display student last and first names in separate columns. The course section information will remain in the Student Last Name column.

Under student names, the gradebook displays separate columns for Student Last Name and Student First Name

  4. If you want to combine the names, repeat step 2 and uncheck the Split Student Names option.

This is an optional setting that faculty can enable and disable. It is not a default or required setting.
