Instructors may want students upload recordings of themselves in discussions. There are two ways for students to upload their recordings. Using the MyClasses Canvas feature or using Panopto.

You can click on the images below to see them larger and with more detail.

Record using MyClasses

This feature allows students upload directly to Canvas, however, this will use up the storage your course has.

  1. Select Reply to your discussion.

  2. In the editing window, select the play symbol with the music note, and select Upload/Record Media.

If you have multiple microphones and cameras, you can select which ones you want to use by selecting the Mic and Webcam button beside the record button.

  1. If you have the need to restart the recording, select the Restart button towards the right. Once you are satisfied with the recording, select Finish.

  2. You can rename the file type if desired. You do have one more opportunity to do the recording again, however, once satisfied, select Save Media.

  3. Depending on the length of the recording, it will take a while to upload the video to the discussion. Once it finishes, it will appear on the discussion text box. Select Reply to fully upload the video.

Record using Panopto

This option is more flexible as it allows students to edit the video if they so desire.

  1. Be sure to follow the instructions on this article first to create a folder for students to upload in.

    Allowing Student Recordings in Panopto

  1. In the editing window, select the green Panopto symbol.

  2. Select the folder the instructor created in the first step. It should be the only one that is highlighted and available for students to click on.

  3. Select the Record tab. Here there are two options for students to choose. Selecting the browser option is more straight forward but is limited to solely recording. Selecting the app version will require students to download the app but can allow them to edit the video.

  4. If selecting the browser option, be sure to allow the webpage to use your microphone and camera. You can choose which camera and microphone to use, and select the big red recording button in the middle when ready.

  5. Once done, the video will upload to the severs depending on how long the recording it.

  6. Once done, go back to the discussion page and you should see your video ready to be uploaded. Select Insert.

  7. Once it finishes, it will appear on the discussion text box. Select Reply to fully upload the video.
