Extra credit is currently not a default option in Canvas. However, you can give students extra credit using a variety of options.

Create a New Assignment with Zero Point Value

Useful for practice activities or low stakes assignments that do not count towards the final grade.

  1. Create an assignment with zero points possible.

  2. After students complete an online submission or submit work offline, you can add and adjust points in the gradebook.

Create Zero-Point Assignment

Note: For a zero-point assignment to factor into a student's grade, you must add a positive point value to at least one additional assignment in any assignment group.

Adding Extra Points for an Existing Assignment

You can give students extra credit by simply adjusting the points.

  1. Add extra points to an assignment you've already created by manually entering them into the gradebook.

Manually Adjust

Note: The added points will increase the total points calculated for the final grade, students who complete extra credit may have an average over 100%.

Add Extra Points Using SpeedGrader

SpeedGrader provides an alternative way to give extra credit.

You can also manually add extra points by editing the grade shown in the Grade field in SpeedGrader.

Create Extra Credit Within a Rubric

You can use rubrics as a way to award extra points for different criteria.

  1. Add an additional Criterion to a Rubric for extra credit.

  2. Make sure you make the rubric worth more than the assignment and you can give students extra points or not without affecting the actual assignment points.
