In New Quizzes, Item banks are used to store questions for use in multiple assessments, for randomizing questions within an assessment, and for sharing questions with others. Item Banks are associated with a user and can be used in multiple courses. Questions updated in an Item bank are updated in all assessments that use that question. You can use your item banks in any course where you have permission to create and edit an assessment using New Quizzes. Questions in item banks can be added to a New Quiz individually or as a randomized group. This guide provides instruction on how to create Item Banks and add questions to those banks.
Step by Step Instructions
On the course menu, select Item Banks. If you do not see it on your left course navigation, go to Settings and under the Navigation tab, enable Item Banks and Save.
Please note: When creating an Item Bank it is recommended that you add the course and other syntax to distinguish Item Banks from one another as they no longer sit within a single course. For example, questions related to COMM 100 using the OER Communication in the Real World course materials might have an Item Bank title of “COMM 100 CRW Chapter 1”. In addition, questions that you want to be randomized together must be in their own Item Bank. For example, all questions related to the transactional model of communication must be in their own Item Bank such as “COMM 100 CRW Chapter 1 - Transactional Model”.
Click + Bank to create an Item Bank.
Enter a title for the Item Bank (treat this similar to a folder name). If you plan to use this item bank in the current course, select the checkbox with the course name. Then click Create Bank.
Click on the title of the Item Bank you just created to add questions.
To add a question to the Item Bank, select the + New button and create your desired question(s).
Repeat step 6 for all desired questions you want added to this Item Bank.
Once you have questions within your Item Banks, follow the Importing Questions from an Item Bank article to add questions to your assessments.
