Downloading Panopto Videos

ID&D KB How-to Guide

Working together to enhance teaching & learning. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to the ID&D team.

Individuals who would like to download a Panopto video for safekeeping or for use in another system can use the following instructions.

NOTE: As of July 2024, Panopto does not allow downloads for multiple videos at once. You will have to download them individually. Supposedly, they plan on adding the feature this year. We will update this article as soon as it is available.

Format the Video

By default, the Panopto podcast output is set to "Tile All Streams" which when downloaded appears as a side-by-side video for recordings with both a primary (e.g. webcam) and secondary (e.g. presentation) source recorded.

Panopto does allow for other outputs, including a picture-in-picture view, primary source only, and secondary source only. Commonly faculty desire their secondary source, typically a PowerPoint presentation, to be the largest video source so text in the presentation is legible. For this purpose, faculty should use the picture-in-picture output option.

Update the Output Streams and Download the Video

  1. Navigate to your Panopto video via MyClasses or from https://salisbury.hosted.panopto.com.

  2. Hover over the video preview image and select the gear icon to view Settings.

  3. Select Outputs.

  4. Under the Video Podcast section, click the Type dropdown and select Picture-in-Picture.

  5. Select Apply.

NOTE: It may be set as Picture-in-Picture by default so you may not see Apply as an option if already selected.

  1. Panopto will re-process the video with the new settings applied. This will take a few minutes or longer depending on the length of the video.

  1. When processing is complete, select Download Podcast.

  2. The video will download locally to your computer as a MP4 file. Most likely, you can find this file in your Downloads folder.
